Our Privacy Policy and Our Commitment to You
Sydney Cancer Genetics understands that family history information is personal and can be sensitive in nature. Your medical and other related information is only collected to effectively assess and manage your familial cancer risk.
We are a medical service and are bound by the Privacy Act to protect your information.
Your information will be stored in your medical file and on our secure practice computer system. It will be accessed only by the treating Physician and only those staff members who need to be involved. All our staff are bound by privacy rules. Also, in line with our obligations under the Privacy Act 1988, we have a Data Breach Prevention and Response policy.
We will ask your consent to pass your information back to your referring doctor and other doctors involved in your care.
We always obtain additional, separate consent regarding genetic testing, the sharing of genetic information with family members (whether directly or indirectly) and/or the participation in any research projects.
We never provide information to your insurer without your express verbal and written permission.
Your health information, and the results of any genetic testing, will not be used for any other purposes without your consent.
If you attend an appointment, we will ask you to read and sign a Privacy Act Consent Form that states all of the above information. It also outlines the circumstances in which information has to be disclosed. These include:

- To fulfil medical indemnity insurance obligations
- To Medicare, or you private health fund, for billing purposes
